The practical essentials before you pick a date.
Dress code, enforcedShoulders covered for all; women in a long skirt below the knee, men in long trousers — no shorts. Wrap skirts are usually lent to women at the entrance.
Each keeps its own daysEvery monastery closes on a different day and hours shift by season. Always check the current schedule before you go — a guided tour plans around it.
Getting thereKalambaka is the town at the foot of the rocks — about 4–5 hours from Athens by road or direct train, and shorter from Thessaloniki.
Steps & accessEach monastery is reached by a staircase cut into the rock (Holy Trinity has ~130 steps). St. Stephen is the easiest — a short bridge, no long climb.
A small entry feeEach monastery charges a small admission paid on site. Guided-tour prices cover transport and a guide, not the per-monastery entry.
Best lightSpring and autumn are most comfortable; sunrise and sunset set the rocks glowing and are the prime times for photographs.
